What is a Boiler Economizer?
Industrial boilers employ the use of auxiliary equipment to improve efficiency and safety. A boiler economizer is one of the most important ones. It is a tubular heat transfer surface that is used to preheat boiler feed water before it enters the steam drum. The economizer in a boiler provides a key function in providing high overall boiler thermal efficiency by recovering the energy from the flue gas before it is exhausted into the atmosphere. They are a device fitted to an Industrial Boiler which saves energy by using the exhaust gases from the boiler to preheat the cold water used to fill it.
In an HRSG (Heat Recovery Steam Generators), water passes through a boiler economizer, then a boiler, and then a superheater. The economizer also prevents flooding of the boiler with liquid water that is too cold to be boiled given the flow rates and design of the boiler.

TYPES OF BOILER ECONOMIZERS
There are two main types of boiler economizers.
Non-condensing economizer
The non-condensing economizer is heat exchanger coils, usually finned in the form of a spiral and are inside the flue gas duct near the exit region of the boiler. By installing a non-condensing economizer, you can potentially raise your overall steam system efficiency and heat recovery by 2% to 4%.
Condensing economizer
The condensing economizer can improve waste heat recovery by cooling the flue gas below its dew point, which is typically around 135°F for products of combustion of natural gas. By installing a condensing economizer, you can potentially improve your overall steam system efficiency and heat recovery by up to 10%.
