What is a Rotary Dryer?
A rotary dryer is a type of industrial dryer that is used to reduce the amount of moisture content of the material that the dryer is handling by utilizing heated gas.
The typical industrial rotary dryer is made up of a cylinder, also known as a drum, that rotates within a support structure such as concrete posts or a steel frame. For this reason, this type of dryer is also called a “Drum” dryer.
The cylinder is positioned at a slight horizontal incline to allow gravity to assist in moving the material through the cylinder. As the cylinder rotates, lifting flights grab up the material and then drop it through the air steam so it’s able to maximize heat transfer easily and efficiently.
When the material gets high enough, it then falls back down to the bottom of the dryer, passing through the heated gas stream as it falls.
So, in essence, a rotary dryer works by tumbling material in a rotating drum as it dries the material through the introduction to heat and air. They can also be indirectly heated to avoid any type of direct contact between the material and the processing medium.
