These sources can be organic biomass such as corn husk, bagasse, palm fiber, wood, or even any other waste. This waste is then converted into a renewable source of energy. Biomass is biological material from living, or recently living organisms, most often referring to plants or plant-derived materials. As a renewable energy source, biomass can either be used directly, or indirectly—once or converted into another type of energy product such as biofuel.
Biomass can be converted to energy in three ways: thermal conversion, chemical conversion, and biochemical conversion. Thermal conversion processes use heat or thermal energy as the leading mechanism to convert biomass energy into another chemical energy. Chemical conversion is a process in which chemical transformation takes place, this means that the final product differs chemically from the source materials. Biochemical conversion is a process that involves the use of enzymes of bacteria or other microorganisms. These break down biomass through various processes like anaerobic digestion, composting or fermentation.
