What is an Air Preheater?
An air preheater is a piece of industrial equipment used as heat-exchangers installed in the exit flue gas duct of an industrial boiler. The function of the air preheater in a boiler is to recover the heat from the industrial boiler flue gas which increases the overall thermal efficiency of the boiler by reducing the useful heat that is lost in the flue gas. The flue gases are then conveyed to the flue gas stack at a much lower temperature, allowing control over the temperature of gases leaving the stack or chimney.
In boilers, air preheaters significantly help by feeding in hot air, increasing the combustion efficiency required for steam boiler operation. They recover up to 60% of the heat from the flue gas and use that to heat the air. Types of Air Preheaters
The most popular air preheaters are tubular preheaters that consist of straight tube bundles which pass through the outlet ducting of an industrial boiler and open at each end outside of the ducting.
Construction Features
Inside the ducting, the hot furnace gases pass through the preheater tubes, transferring heat from the exhaust gas to the air inside the air preheater. A fan then forces ambient air through ducting from one end of the air preheater tubes to the other end. The air inside of the tubes is then heated and emerges into another set of ducting, which carries it into the industrial boiler furnace for combustion.
Overcoming problems
The tubular air preheater ducting for cold and hot air requires more space and structural supports than a rotating air preheater design. Further, due to dust-laden abrasive flue gases, the tubes outside the ducting wear out faster on the side facing the gas current.
