What is a Boiler Tube?
Boiler tubes are metal tubes that are usually made of carbon steel or alloy steel that are used in industrial boilers. A boiler tube is usually used in fossil fuel plants, in steam boilers, for power generation, industrial processing plants, electric power plants, and many other industrial applications. A boiler tube is used in industrial boilers and can either be made for medium-pressure boiler pipes or high-pressure boiler pipes.
Medium-pressure and high-pressure boiler tubes go through the same initial process when being manufactured. The typical process includes fine drawing, surface bright, hot rolling, and then cold drawn with heat expansion. To make sure the boiler pipes are ready for high-pressure, which requires them to be stronger and more resistant, the following must be done.
For high-pressure boiler tubes, heat treatment includes heating and cooling to increase the toughness, hardness, and overall wear resistance. The heat treatment steps include quenching, tempering, and annealing.
The quenching is done to increase the hardness and durability of the high-pressure boiler tube. The tube (pipe) is then heated evenly to a hot temperature and then quickly cooled off in water or oil for instant colling, which is then followed by cooling in air or in a freezing zone. Brittleness is then removed from the pipe through tempering. In the last phase of the process, the boiler tube is heated to a hot temperature and then left for slow cooling in ash or lime, which is referred to as annealing.
