What is a Boiler Economizer?

In the world of industrial boilers, auxiliary equipment plays a vital role in enhancing both efficiency and safety. Among these crucial components, the boiler economizer stands out as one of the most important pieces of equipment. Think of it as a tubular heat exchanger strategically placed to preheat the water on its way to the steam drum, increasing efficiency before the water even reaches its destination. This small but mighty device is a game-changer for maximizing overall boiler efficiency. How? The economizer works its magic by capturing and utilizing the heat from the flue gas before it dissipates into the air, significantly boosting thermal efficiency. A boiler economizer is like the ultimate energy saver attached to an industrial boiler. It harnesses the heat from the boiler’s exhaust gases to give the cold water that fills it a toasty head start. This simple yet ingenious process results in significant energy savings. When it comes to HRSGs (Heat Recovery Steam Generators), the water journey begins at the boiler economizer, where it gets a nice warm-up. Then, it moves on to the boiler and finally to the superheater. But the economizer isn’t just about heating things up; it also acts as a safeguard, preventing the boiler from flooding with water that’s too cold to boil, given the flow rates and boiler design. It basically makes sure everything runs smoothly and optimally.

OUR CAPABILITIES

TYPES OF BOILER ECONOMIZERS

There are two main types of boiler economizers.

Non-condensing economizer

A non-condensing economizer consists of heat exchanger coils, typically finned and spiral-shaped, located inside the flue gas duct near the boiler's exit. Installing a non-condensing economizer can potentially increase overall steam system efficiency and heat recovery by 2% to 4%.

Condensing economizer

A condensing economizer improves waste heat recovery by cooling the flue gas below its dew point, typically around 135°F for natural gas combustion products. Installing a condensing economizer can potentially increase overall steam system efficiency and heat recovery by up to 10%.

frequently asked questions

A boiler economizer is a heat recovery device that preheats boiler feedwater using waste heat from flue gases. By capturing this energy before it exits the stack, economizers improve boiler efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance overall system performance.

The two main types of boiler economizers are non-condensing and condensing. Non-condensing economizers recover sensible heat from flue gases, while condensing economizers capture additional latent heat by condensing water vapor, resulting in higher efficiency.

Boiler economizers are not required for all systems, but they are highly recommended to improve efficiency and reduce fuel costs. Larger industrial boilers and high-demand applications benefit the most from installing an economizer.

Boiler economizers are sized based on factors such as boiler capacity, fuel type, flue gas temperature, allowable pressure drop, and desired feedwater temperature. Proper sizing ensures optimal heat recovery, efficiency, and long-term system performance.

Boiler economizers require routine maintenance to maintain efficiency and reliability. This typically includes soot blowing to remove buildup on heat transfer surfaces, as well as periodic inspection and cleaning of economizer tubes.

A boiler economizer can improve efficiency by 5% to 10% or more, depending on the system design and operating conditions. By recovering waste heat from flue gases, economizers reduce the fuel required to generate steam.
